Cargurus.com Reviews the All-New 2017 Jeep Compass: A Revamped Compact SUV that's All Jeep

The 2017 Jeep Compass is a vastly different compact SUV than its predecessor, all for the better, concludes CarGurus.com in a review. Still positioned as the affordable Jeep, and with a price tag that matches, the new Compass offers much improved off-road performance says CarGurus.com, including a special Trailhawk edition that's loaded with equipment and features to negotiate all types of terrain.

The 2017 Compass is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that sends power to either the front or all four wheels depending on the transmission settings. It's good for 180 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. Remember, you're not going to be drag racing in the Compass, you're more likely going to carefully navigating off-road trails, and for that the engine is quite capable. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the Compass Sport, and available on the 4WD Compass Latitude. Front-wheel Compass models gets a six-speed automatic, while 4WD models get a nine-speed automatic. Fuel economy is quite road for this kind of vehicle - e.g., 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway with 4WD manual or FWD automatic.

The exterior design of the Compass has been recast for much more Jeep-like look - i.e., more rugged. CarGurus.com says the 2017 Compass resembles a miniaturized Grand Cherokee. It's available in four trims, from the base Sport to the Latitude, Limited and Trailhawk editions. The Compass has a full-time Jeep Active Drive 4x4 system that can send 100 percent of engine power to any wheel when needed, and Jeep Active Drive low has a 20:1 crawl ratio. The Trailhawk includes this latter feature, and also has a Rock mode with lower drivetrain ratios.

Inside, the Compass is comfortable and the layout is versatile. The passenger seat will even fold flat to accommodate extra-long pieces of gear. There's a new generation of the UConnect infotainment system, and it's now compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Finally, Jeep says the new Compass has over 70 available safety features, from a reverse camera and ABS to more advanced technologies like lane-keep assist, blind-spot warning and forward-collision alert.
