Going Over the River and Through the Woods? Make Sure Your Car is Ready for Holiday Travel...

It's that most wonderful time of the year, when millions of Americans hit the highways to visit friends and family for the holidays. If you plan to be out among them this Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year's, make sure your car is ready for a longer-than-normal road trip. Here are five simple things you can do to be prepared.

  1. Put together an emergency kit. Put together a simple emergency kit to keep in your trunk, in the event your car breaks down or bad weather forces you off the road. Your emergency kit should include items like a blanket(s), candles and matches, a first aid kit, flares, a flashlight, jumper cables, a small shovel, energy snacks and water.
  2. Check your engine coolant. Also known as antifreeze, your engine coolant should be able to withstand the coldest temperatures your car will experience this winter.
  3. Check your windshield washer fluid. This seems like the most obvious thing to check, but is often the most frequently overlooked. After you top off your washer fluid level, keep an extra jug in the trunk. It can get used up faster than expected during sustained periods of bad weather.
  4. Perform routine pre-travel maintenance. Check your engine oil level, tire pressure, lights and battery charge the day before you're set to leave for your trip.
  5. Ride on the right tires. There's a noticeable difference between driving on all-season and winter tires. Winter tires are made of a softer rubber compound and have more lines in the tread blocks to increase traction on wet or snowy surfaces. Summer and all-season tires can also lose their effectiveness when temperatures drop below 45 degrees.
